The fifth annual
South Jones Band of Braves 5K Run/Walk was held in
Ellisville on September 30 with over 60 people signed up
for the 5K. This was a great day for running with
temperatures in the 50-60 range and very little
humidity. The course is slightly hilly, but according to
Bob Clark and some others from the coast, we should have
left the word "slightly" off the description.
William Garrett, who ran cross country at Madison Central when he was in high school, took the early lead and never gave it up. Leonard Vergunst came in a close second to take the Masters award. Phillip Wedgeworth was the Grand Masters winner. Amy Benoit was the first female finisher. Audrey Jackson took the Masters and Vicki Copeland won the Grand Masters. This race featured several good runners. Thirteen year old Anthony Stricker came in fourth overall with an impressive time of 19.48. Adding to that, several other members of the Stricker family ran and placed. The most competitive age group was the 30-34 males. It was good to see so many of the Gulf Coast Running Club up at the race. Seeing Steve Ulery back and running well was great and inspirational as well. In addition to the five-year age groups and good trophies, this race gave away many door prizes. The organizers and workers did an admirable job and are to be commended for all of their hard work to make this race a success. Mark your calendar for this one next year.
