Hub City Cyclists

"In most of the world, I am riding a heavily laden bicycle and therefore I am very rich. In the USA, I am riding a heavily laden bicycle and therefore I am very poor."--Alistair Humphreys

See examples of uses for bicycles and motor bikes from around the world!

"There are over 1 million traffic fatalities from car crashes world wide annually. Over 2/3 of those killed are cyclists and pedestrians." ITDP

There were 696 bicyclist deaths in 2007. 88% were men. 92% were not wearing helmets. 28% had a BAC over .08%. See IIHS

Note: The term "Hub City Cyclists" is a nickname which refers to an informal group of people who love to ride bikes. It's not a club, has no bylaws, officers, rules, or dues; and doesn't hold events. They just arrange by word of mouth and e-mail to ride together at regular weekly times, or on special occasions. The purpose of this page is to help them communicate and help new comers find out where to meet.

More Bike trivia: You are 14 times more likely to be killed riding a mile in the U.S. on a bicycle than in a car. So be careful, especially you guys. Of the 800 cyclists killed in an average year, over 90% are men. 500,000 are injured, and 80% of these are men. Yet men cyclists only slightly outnumber women! Some women probably attribute this to intelligence, but there must be another reason, but as a male cyclist I don't have a clue. HCC member.

Members are reminded that a good place to ride mountain bikes or wide tired leisure bike is the Equestrian Trail that runs alongside the Longleaf Trace from Carson to Epley. It has been much improved this year and most of the problems with low spots were fixed. It will be extended even further in future years to the Beaver Pond. Also USM has created an excellent network of mountain bike trails just west of Jackson Station. Check out the trails on both
sides of the Trace.

Hattiesburg Bicycle Center has moved to a new location:  102 North 38th Avenue, Suite G--they're only a block away from the old location.  Now they are in a strip mall behind Panino's Italian Restaurant and the Shell Station on Hardy Street, down from Salon 38. They plan to re-open on Tuesday, May 13.  Please, excuse the mess for a few days as they attempt to get everything in place. Same phone number and store hours:  601 264-9399, Tues-Fri 10-6, Sat 10-4.

Bike Walk Mississippi Hires Executive Director

Bike Walk Mississippi has hired a new executive director, Karen Mogridge. Mogridge joins BWM with a passion to help make Mississippi a more bike/pedestrian-friendly state and unite cyclists in a statewide network to push for bike/pedestrian-friendly legislation at the state, regional and local levels. Mogridge noted that Mississippi was recently ranked in the bottom five of the Bicycle Friendly States by the League. An immediate goal of the BWM advocacy program, Mogridge explained, will be to move Mississippi up in the list at least by five more states.

The HCC will host monthly rides the 1st Sunday of each month, beginning at 1:30 pm at the USM trailhead. (there is also usually an informal ride most other Sundays at 1:30). The main purpose of these rides is to encourage new riders to become involved with the club. On these rides there will be a designated ride coordinator who will assist in grouping cyclists of similar abilities. The ride coordinator will also remain with the slowest rider. Refreshments will be served following the ride. Here are some pictures of  some Sunday rides. (Click on a picture to see it at full size):
