Hub City Cyclists

"In most of the world, I am riding a heavily laden bicycle and therefore I am very rich. In the USA, I am riding a heavily laden bicycle and therefore I am very poor."--Alistair Humphreys

"There are over 1 million traffic fatalities from car crashes world wide annually. Over 2/3 of those killed are cyclists and pedestrians." ITDP

Note: The term "Hub City Cyclists" is a nickname which refers to an informal group of people who love to ride bikes. It's not a club, has no bylaws, officers, rules, or dues; and doesn't hold events. They just arrange by word of mouth and e-mail to ride together at regular weekly times, or on special occasions. The purpose of this page is to help them communicate and help new comers find out where to meet.

More Bike trivia: You are 14 times more likely to be killed riding a mile in the U.S. on a bicycle than in a car. So be careful, especially you guys. Of the 800 cyclists killed in an average year, over 90% are men. 500,000 are injured, and 80% of these are men. Yet men cyclists only slightly outnumber women! Some women probably attribute this to intelligence, but there must be another reason, but as a male cyclist I don't have a clue. HCC member.

Members are reminded that a good place to ride mountain bikes or wide tired leisure bike is the Equestrian Trail that runs alongside the Longleaf Trace from Carson to Epley. It has been much improved this year and most of the problems with low spots were fixed. It will be extended even further in future years to the Beaver Pond.

The HCC will host monthly rides the 1st Sunday of each month, beginning at 1:30 pm at the USM trailhead. (there is also usually an informal ride most other Sundays at 1:30). The main purpose of these rides is to encourage new riders to become involved with the club. On these rides there will be a designated ride coordinator who will assist in grouping cyclists of similar abilities. The ride coordinator will also remain with the slowest rider. Refreshments will be served following the ride. Here are some pictures of  some Sunday rides. (Click on a picture to see it at full size):

Jerry Ryan was an avid cyclist and bicycling advocate. He was instrumental in helping to start the Longleaf Trace. He was killed in a tragic bicycle accident, and is sorely missed by the local bicycling community. His family has helped to sponsor the Longleaf Trace and contributed to building the Jerry Ryan Memorial Outdoor Complex At Gateway Southern Miss. The first Jerry Ryan Memorial Bicycle Ride was held November 2, 2003, starting at the Southern Miss Gateway of the Longleaf Trace, with a  fellowship get-together after the ride.
